Who’s Listening?
Christian and Gospel music resonates deeply with millions of Americans every week. According to GMA’s findings:
- 54 million adults engage with Christian and Gospel music several times weekly, making it one of the nation’s most popular music genres.
- The audience is diverse, with 40% identifying as part of an ethnic minority, underscoring the genre’s inclusivity and cultural significance.
- The gender split among listeners is nearly even, with 52% female and 48% male listeners.
- A youthful and vibrant audience drives the genre’s growth, as 62% of listeners are under 50, including Millennials (ages 22–36) and Gen X (ages 37–55).
Faith at the Core
Christian and Gospel music primarily attracts people of faith. Among the listeners:
- 49% are Protestant believers.
- 20% identify as Catholic.
The music continues to serve as a source of spiritual encouragement and unity for people of diverse backgrounds and denominations.
Where Are Listeners Located?
The South leads as the hub for Christian and Gospel music, with 44% of listeners residing in this region. Other areas also show significant engagement:
- The Midwest accounts for 20% of listeners.
- The West follows with 21%.
- The Northeast contributes 15%.
Values and Education
Listeners reflect a broad spectrum of values:
- 36% identify as conservative,
- 30% as moderate,
- and 34% as liberal, demonstrating the genre’s ability to transcend political divides.
Christian and Gospel music also attracts an educated and financially stable audience:
- 47% of listeners hold a college degree.
- 50% earn $50,000 or more annually.
